Meet With Manager's Unrealistic Expectations
Wanting to impress the boss is bit natural. You work hard, complete given tasks, achieve targets, your leader, manager and colleagues notice, and finally you make your way up to the ladder. So simple, isn't it? But might be your boss is not exactly on the same page as you are when it comes to his expectations of your performance.
Expectations are usual and obvious in all human beings and bit more enhanced among business people. Leaders and managers at work place expect much more than limit from employees. Whether required or not putting pressure and working under pressure is the real job, is a fact every employee face and suffer. What do you mean by Unrealistic Expectations? Most important than this question is the other one, Why the expectations could be unrealistic? Expectations are directly or indirectly is connected with desires. Desires are the wishes, is a complimentary where people think to get it, want to acquire it, thought by own, achieved by own and valued by own. But this desire may be of your leader or manager which they want you to fulfill on behalf of them, and it is called as Expectations. Expectations mostly are desired from others to be fulfilled. In the organization, people work to earn and to get earned every one has to work for the organization that is by meeting organization's expectations. Here comes the point that everyone has their own ability to maintain or to perform any task in the life, and same as at workplace. Still unrealistic expectations are put on head which could be out of one's ability, talent, skill or may be desire or we can say which is not wise.
Like the expectations of manager employees also expect beyond limit in some aspects at the work place. Employees who are experience and familiar know the tactics how to manage and tackle the unrealistic expectations at work. Not all the situations can be fought but there are some smart ways are vital to be followed to overcome the situation. In the same manner there are many tips that need to be followed to manage your manager.
Lets have an eye on few aspects about how to handle the unrealistic expectations at work place.
Before going further make sure that what is been asked you to perform is exactly what expected is or is unreasonable.Managers always try to push you beyond your comfort zone but they should know your capabilities. If manager tries you to push more and you are overwhelmed, just stop and ask yourself why? Is it because you are lacking with capability or it is something which is out of your comfort zone? Figure out from where the stress is coming and reason behind your anxiety, insecurity will be the first step to get manage with further step.
Make a list of the tasks given to you. Judge them all if they are related to your role and are realistic. Realistic by the means whether the task is really be able to complete within given time period. Figure out where and why your manager's requests are unreasonable. Write down everything what is in your mind and try to find out why you feel challenged to get the things done.
Once you figured out what is the actual reason of getting work challenged and unrealistic, the immediate step is talk to your manager about the work given to you and the issues you face. Fortunately you are ready with the list of the challenges you are expecting. Do it early, as soon you realize before manager overestimate you. Before having a meet be ready with the plan of what you have been asked to do, where you lack, where you are overestimated and what you need to overcome with the challenges while performing the task. This can be a good way to discuss and let your manager know how unrealistic goals have been allocated.
Do not get frustrated or tensed for not being able to do what have been asked to do. Manager does not want to hear no from you and the thing want to listen is to whinge them, which can be the great way to limit your career. Instead of giving reasons why you can't meet the expectations, shift the discussion on what you exactly need to meet them. This will change the conversation and gives you the opportunity to demonstrate indirectly why an expectation is unrealistic as only to aware them with the fact.
Discuss with the colleagues whatever stuff have given to you to accomplish.Sharing work load with the experienced work mates will never go waste. May be others have already gone through with the problems or the situation you face challenging in. Asking expertise will help you get to know the easier ways to meet the requirements and might be colleagues can help you to deal with these unrealistic challenges.
Almost anything can be achieved with the unlimited resources. Identifying the need of resources and additional technologies will definitely help you to be successful and think how to use them. Remember unrealistic goals can be realistic if you have enough resources and technology.
An employee should listen to the manager carefully what exactly he wants to direct us. Ask every small thing where you have issue, discuss repeatedly what he has assigned you and what can be done from your end. Before ending up every discussion define again what is been asked and how much exactly is able to complete. By this he will come to know what and how much unrealistic their goals and assignments are.
Updating and intimating every stage of completion is always useful for you to let your manager know what is the status of your work. Let them know what challenges you face at every stage of performing the task. This will let them come to know what resources, technologies, help or your assistance is required due to assigning the unrealistic goals which are not possible to achieve.
